Lal-lo Church - Cagayan

Located along Cagayan Valley Road in the town of Lal-lo in the province of Cagayan, Lal-lo Church is the last of the three old churches built in the town during the Spanish colonial era.

Also known as St. Dominic Parish ChurchSanto Domingo Parish Church, Lal-lo Church was built in the early 1600s after Pope Clement VIII created the Diocese of Nueva Segovia in 1595.

However, due to the constant threat of the rampaging waters of the Cagayan River, the Diocese of Nueva Segovia was transferred to Vigan, Ilocos Sur. To avoid confusion the town's name was reverted back to Lal-lo.

The transfer of the diocese affected the town heavily. It resulted in the merging of the three churches into a single parish. The two other churches were abandoned and eventually destroyed due to neglect. The remaining church is now the present-day Lal-lo Church.

It was by chance that I got to visit this historic church. My group and I were heading to Sta. Ana for our trip to Palaui Island during our 2014 Northern Luzon 360 Road Trip. However, due to unavoidable circumstances, we had to call it a day in a hotel 15 minutes away from the church. Since the following day was a Sunday, we had a chance to hear mass held in Lal-lo Church.  It was a brand new experience for me, I enjoyed listening to a mass conducted half in English and half in the local tongue.

That just proves that the best adventures are the ones that are unexpected and unplanned.

Why visit Lal-lo Church?

Lal-lo Church is a must-visit if you plan to do a pilgrimage in the province of Cagayan. It's one of the well-preserved Spanish colonial-era churches in the province. Aside from that Lal-lo Church is also one of the most beautiful. Don't forget to stop by when you are in Cagayan.

Getting to Lal-lo Church:

From Manila, ride a bus heading to Sta. Ana in Cagayan. Tell the conductor to drop you off at the church. (Yup! the church is just by the roadside.) If the bus you rode won't pass by the church. Tell the driver to drop you off at the nearest drop-off point around. You can then ride a tricycle or a multicab to the church.
