Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple - Singapore

Located at 141 Serangoon Road in the Little India district of Singapore, Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple is one of the oldest and most popular Hindu temples in the country.

Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple History

According to some oral history, Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple was built by the pioneering Indians who migrated to work and live in the area sometime in the late 17th century or early 18th century. It was dedicated to the Hindu goddess Kali and the wife of the Hindu god Shiva, Parvati. It was said that the first shrines of the temple were centered around a clay statue of an angry Sri Kaliamman. Over the years more and more shrines and rooms were added to the temple.

It was in October 1983 when Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple underwent rebuilding.  It was patterned to the architectural design of the South Indian Tamil temples. The distinctive Gate-Tower, eight main domes, and several other minor ones were added to the temple. It took three years for these to be built.

Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple stands not only as a religious building for the Indians but also serves as a reminder of the perseverance of the Indian pioneers who settled in Singapore and became an integral part of the rise of the said great nation.

Today, the temple is one of the main tourist destinations of Singapore. I got to visit it with my family during our 2017 Singapore - Malaysia Tour.  During our visit, I was the only one who went in because, during that time, the temple was jam-packed with devotees and tourists. It was my first time to witness a Hindu religious activity and surely it was a memorable one (I now know where and why they get the bindi or the red dot in a male or female's forehead).

Countless more statues of deities can be found in the temple.

Here are some things to keep in mind when visiting Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple or any other Hindi temple:
  • Remove your footwear when entering the temple. Leave your shoe in the shoe rack near the entrance.
  • You can take photos or videos inside but make sure that you don't interfere with the religious activities.
  • Avoid eating inside the temple. You can bring fruits as donations though.
  • Don't smoke inside the temple.
