Food Trip: Vikings SM City BF

The so-called "fiesta spirit" really does make buffet or eat-all-you-can restaurants popular among Filipinos. Fiesta, for those who are unfamiliar with it, is an age-old tradition in the Philippines and other countries whereas a way of thanking God for the bountiful harvest, townspeople prepare generous meals for everyone to partake. Sadly, today, fiestas are not what they used to be. Urban areas do not or rarely celebrate it while rural areas celebrate it but have already evolved and become highly commercialized.

For those looking for the so-called fiesta spirit, the closest one can get are through buffet restaurants. That is why for our food trip today we are heading to one of the famous buffet restaurants in the country. Join me as we check out Vikings SM City BF in Paranaque City, Metro Manila.

Even the lighting makes you feel that you're in a forest

Located on the 2nd floor of SM BF in Dr. A. Santos Avenue, Paranaque City, Vikings SM City BF is one of the several Vikings buffet restaurant branches in the country. Each of these branches has its own motifs. Vikings SM City BF is known for its nature-inspired interior design. Although you won't see ginormous trees and wildlife here, this branch's brown, black, white, and green color motif plus the wooden wall displays and apple green lamps really do make dinners feel that they are surrounded by nature.

I got to visit and dine at Vikings SM City BF last November during our school lunch out. Days before this event, our school came out with a witty "Admirals Vs. Vikings" advertisement on the school's website and social media platforms to hype us up (The name Admiral is the collective name of the students and faculty of our school) and it surely did. Aside from discussing this event frequently, it also motivated us to eat as much as we could just to prove that the Admirals won't lose in a mere eating challenge. During the lunch out, each Admiral had his target food in mind. Some went for the expensive foods, others to the unique dishes, and a few dropped the Admiral attitude and just ate whatever is available, like Vikings of olden times. In the end, the more than 50 faculty members who stormed Vikings SM City BF toasted to what they believed was a successful lunch out and went back to school. The restaurant on the other hand survived to tell the tale but of course, got tons of money as payment for the "ordeal" (so it's a win-win scenario for both parties).

Are you ready to eat?
Aye Aye Captain!

Overall, Vikings SM City BF is a great place to experience that fiesta spirit and of course bond with family and friends (but make sure to leave those picky eaters at home).

  2. The place seems to have plenty of options on the buffet. I guess if I were here, just a spoon or a small piece of each and I would be full :) The price also seems reasonable to me. And the decor is nice mood setting one. Beautiful (mouthwatering) pictures of the food you have got :)

  3. The food looks great, but I wondered whether there actually is some truly Filipino food? So far, only rice would come to my mind - and calamansi juice. But there has to be more, right? Can you tell me what are unique Filipino cuisine dishes?

  5. That seems like a lot of food. What else do they do to attract the local sentiments or vibes? Is the festival just about the eating? In India we have festivals on feasts, but with added local flavours like onam sadhya. women wear a particular shade of white and yellow sarees, and men basically play a boat race. Tradition kept alive in the villages while cities have a more mellowed down selfie driven onam lunch

    1. Hi there Katchu, festivals and food always goes hand in hand in the Philippines. A long time ago, the food in festivals are given free and tourists are even asked to go inside the houses to partake of the meals. However, because of the evolving culture, everything now requires payment.

I would love to participate in one of the festivals there in India. I have read a lot about how beautiful and nice your festivals are. =)

  6. Though we often head to buffet restaurants for team lunch at work, I haven't seen anything like this. The spread of the buffet is very overwhelming. I really love teh way food is displayed- makes it look irresistible. And the crafts on the walls come as a bonus. I would so love to dine at the Vikings.

  7. Lovely concept and I can only imagine how much fun it would be in the village before commercialization ! Great spread that only a viking can do justice to :)
