Food Trip: Taho

We don't really need to go very far for our latest food trip adventure. That is simply because our featured food is a common sight in the streets of the Philippines. It is none other than -the taho.

Taho

Taho is a popular Filipino snack that is made from fresh silken tofu, mixed with arnibal (brown sugar syrup), and sago pearls. Taho is usually peddled by a magtataho (taho vendor) early in the morning up until "supplies last."

You would usually hear the magtataho yell "Tahoooooooo!"  as he go around your neighborhood. The taho is traditionally served warm, although some would prefer it cold. If you're planning to avail of one, I highly recommend that you buy it early in the morning for guaranteed freshness.

The Classic Taho

He's the magtataho in our subdivision.

The silken tofu...

The sago and the arnibal are then added to the silken tofu.

Make sure to mix the ingredients well.

Throughout time, Filipino creativity and their love for taho led to new flavors popping out in the market. I have seen and tasted ube taho, cookies and cream taho, cheese taho, buko-pandan taho, and grape taho. However, in some places in the country like Benguet for example, the strawberry farms of the province allowed the fresh supply of strawberry taho for the daily consumption of the locals of the province. I have yet to see if Davao could produce a Durian taho or mango taho from Guimaras.

My wife sidelines as a magtataho

Taste-testing the taho.

As proven throughout time taho would forever be part of the Filipino culture.

    1. Hi there! sure sure. =) I recall that there was once a store in malls that sells those but since it was not a hit the franchise died down. Only the strawberry taho of Baguio remains but there is one in Alabang North gate that sells coffee flavored taho but not regularly.
