Food Trip: Pili Nut

This is the first time in my food trip adventures where I would talk about a nut ( well actually it's a fruit). Our spotlight today is focused on our food of the day -the pili nut o simply pili.

Pili

 A pili nut is known for its soft pulpy core, covered by a thin skin which in turn is protected by a hard shell. The fruit is small which usually measures 4-7cm long.

The pili nut is an important product of the Bicol Region particularly the province of Camarines Sur. It comes from either the Canarium Ovatum or the Canarium Luzonicum species which are both locally called pili trees.

Once you visit the region, you would find how creative the locals get in marketing the pili nuts. The most common preparation is the roasted nut. It is similar to a roasted peanut. The pili nuts could also be pickled or cooked. The most popular is the sugar-coated pili nut. But for me, I prefer to eat it raw.

 Pili nuts are rich in ascorbic acid, calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, niacin, phosphorus, potassium, riboflavin, sodium, thiamine, and zinc. Well, looking at it, it seems like the pili nut is the organic version of our multivitamins.

What are you waiting for? Visit the Bicol Region and taste the rich flavor of the pili nut. (I highly recommend Ortega's Pili Nut in Camalig in the province of Albay. They sell quality cooked and candied pili nuts.

Our adventure today takes us to a mountain south of Metro Manila. Mt. Gulugod Baboy  (other variations Mt. Gulugod-Baboy ) is located in Anilao, Mabini in the province of Batangas. Japan Diaries 2: Day 5

Day 5 May 21, 2018 Kyoto Adventure (Day 2) We woke up to yet another beautiful day here in Japan . The weather is great, perfect for our planned activities for today.  To familiarize ourselves with the place where we will live for another three days, our plan for today is to have a walking tour around Kyoto Station which is quite near our place. I told my wife that she should be prepared to walk the whole day and I'm happy that she agreed. (Well that's one less problem for me). Located in 48 Noboriojicho, Nara City in Nara Prefecture, Kohfukuji  ( 興福寺 ) is a Buddhist temple that serves as the national headquarters of the Hosso school of Buddhism.  Kohfukuji  ( 興福寺 ) Kohfukuji History Kohfukuji or simply Kofukuji was established in 669 by Kagami no Okimi in the hopes that it would please Buddha, which in turn, would help her husband Fujiwara no Kamatari recover from his illness.  The first temple was built in Yamashina, Yamashiro Province which is in present-day Kyoto. Then in 672, the temple was dismantled and moved to  Fujiwara-kyo as it was the first planned Japanese Capital. However, the temple was dismantled again and moved to its present location in 710.
