Kapurpurawan Rock Formation - Ilocos Norte

Located on the coast of the town of Burgos in Ilocos Norte, Kapurpurawan Rock Formation is a picturesque rock formation that has become a top tourist destination in the province.

Kapurpurawan Rock Formation Details:

The name Kapurpurawan is from the Ilokano word "puraw" which means white. This obviously came from the coloration of the limestone that was exposed to Bangui bay's strong waves and winds.

Here's an alternate area where you can take photos.

Below are some of the photos taken at Kapurpurawan Rock Formation:

I almost had a chance to visit it last 2011 when it was just starting to gain popularity but missed it due to time constraints. It was just last 2017 that I finally got to see it with my own eyes. However, unlike then when visitors can go up the rock formations, it is now already sealed off as there were signs of damage and degradation brought by the multitudes of visitors climbing and even vandalizing this beautiful rock formation.

Regardless, visitors can still view this amazing natural masterpiece from the viewing deck several meters away. There is also another area several meters away from the rock formation where visitors can take photos of themselves with the white limestone background.

Try out the horseback ride
Can you see the rock formation from the jump-off point?

Keep these in mind, dear visitor...

Aside from viewing Kapurpurawan Rock Formation, visitors can also try out the horseback ride which gives visitors a different kind of adventure. It also gives these visitors access to several areas that are not accessible by foot. Speaking of visitors, the best time to visit Kapurpurawan Rock Formation is early in the morning when there are fewer visitors and it is not yet that hot.

Kapurpurawan Rock Formation Opening Hours:

Why visit Kapurpurawan Rock Formation?

Kapurpurawan Rock Formation is totally an Instagram-worthy destination. It's a place to visit if you love seeing beautiful "nature-made art" then this place is for you. Keep in mind that this place usually gets crowded particularly during the Holy Week and during summer break. Parking might be a big concern if you bring your car along during these times.

Getting to Kapurpurawan Rock Formation:

From Cubao, ride a bus going to Laoag City. From there, transfer to another bus or van heading to Pagudpod. Tell the conductor to drop you off at the access road going to Kapurpurawan. From there it is approximately a three-kilometer walk away. If you're not a fan of walking, you may choose to head to Burgos town proper first and from there, rent a tricycle that will bring you to Kapurpurawan and back.

  1. It's now close to the public? How come. Good thing my friends and I were able to visit it in 2012, my, that's a long time ago. Kapurparawan is my most favorite during that Ilocos trip. But I missed that statue of Lam Ang. I don't think we went to that area.

    1. Hi Marge, yup it is now closed to public all thanks to the vandals and irresponsible tourists. =(
I think the statue of Lam Ang is newly installed to add something to this place.

  2. These are very nice rock formations against a stunning blue sky. Why is it that this place is off limits to people? Is it dangeous or is it too windy?

  3. When I visited that site in 2012, I honestly enjoyed gazing more at the scenery on the way to the rock formation rather than the rock formation itself.

  4. Natural rock formations can be so wonderful. It seems Ilocos is particularly full of unique landscapes - be it deserts or rocks. Was it easy to climb and walk these rocks? Can elderly or little kids also take this trip?

    1. Well, the rock formations are off limits but there is an area a few meters away that has the same color as the rock formation. Kids and elderly can visit it. =)
