Palawan: Immaculate Conception Cathedral

Located along Rizal Avenue in Barangay Liwanag, Puerto Princesa City in Palawan, Immaculate Conception Cathedral s probably the most well known Spanish Colonial era church in the province.
The history of this church dates back to 1872 when the Spaniards started colonizing the area known now as Puerto Princesa City. It was also on that same year that the province celebrated its first mass.

Also known to some as Puerto Princesa Cathedral, this religious structure was named after the patron saint of Palawan -The Immaculate Conception. A century-old statue of the patron saint is preserved and displayed inside the cathedral. Upon closer inspection, you'd notice that it wears special hand crafted clothes designed by the devoted and pious locals.
This church reminds me of San Sebastian

Unlike some Spanish era churches which maintained its old facade, several renovations were done to the cathedral's facade already. The Immaculate Conception Cathedral is also constantly repainted by the local government to ensure its preservation.

I got to visit the cathedral with my family during our 4-day Palawan tour. It was part of our Puerto Princesa City tour and is also our second destination after the Plaza Cuartel. The facade of the cathedral kind of reminds me of the beautiful San Sebastian Church in Manila.

Overall, Immaculate Conception Cathedral is a nice place to add in your tour of Puerto Princesa. Nothing beats a historical yet religious destination.

Getting there:

From Puerto Princesa International Airport, ride a taxi or a jeepney that will bring you to the town proper or poblacion. The trip is around 15- 20 minutes long depending on the traffic conditions.
