Imus Cathedral - Cavite

Located in General Castaneda Street in the City of Imus in Cavite, Imus Cathedral is the seat of the bishop of the Diocese of Imus. It is also one of the oldest Spanish colonial churches in the province.

Imus Cathedral History

Also known as the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Pillar, Imus Cathedral started out as a small chapel-of-ease in Barangay Toclong in Cavite Viejo (now Kawit). It was under the supervision of the Augustinian Recollects who, in 1774, would petition the Spanish government to convert Imus into an independent municipality. However, it was only in 1795 that Imus was finally separated from Cavite Viejo. With this, a provisional church was established in an area known as Barangay Bayan Luma.

In 1823, the town center was moved to its present location in Barangay Balangon, and with it came the construction of the parish church of Imus in the same year. Unlike the previous churches that were built using light materials, the new parish church of Imus was built using stones and bricks. Its facade was patterned after the fifth Manila Cathedral which existed from 1760 to 1852. Today, despite a few improvements, this still remains as the architectural design of Imus Cathedral

On November 13, 2006, Imus Cathedral was declared as a structure of historical significance. A historical marker was placed on its facade by the National Historical Institute (NHI). You may check out its photo above.

I got to visit Imus Cathedral for the first time during our 2018 Cavite loop Visita Iglesia. It was our last stop before going back home. What I liked most about the cathedral are its picturesque facade and its bricked interior design. Looking at its facade made me feel that I am looking at the 18th century Manila Cathedral. Pilgrims and history buffs would surely enjoy a visit to this church. Before I forget, don't forget to visit the plaza in front of the church too there are a lot of things to learn from it too. As a matter of fact, I would even write a separate article just for it.

UPDATED NOVEMBER 2020

The Imus Cathedral has been elevated into a diocesan shrine. The rite of the declaration will be held on December 3, 2020, coinciding with the celebration of the 8th anniversary of the canonical coronation of the miraculous Our Lady of the Pillar which is the patroness of the diocese of Imus.

In order for a church to become a diocesan shrine, it has to first become a place of historical significance, a pilgrimage site, and also exceed other churches in terms of worship, Christian formation, and social services.

Why visit Imus Cathedral?

Imus Cathedral is one of the most beautiful Spanish Colonial-era churches in the province of Cavite. If you are a Catholic pilgrim or you are doing a Visita Iglesia, then I highly suggest that you include this historic church on your list if you are in Cavite

Getting to Imus Cathedral:

From Manila, ride a multicab or van going to MOA. From there, there are vans that will bring you directly to Imus. Tell the van driver to drop you off the street nearest to the cathedral.
