First Timer's Guide to Kyoto City Bus One-Day Pass

Kyoto City is one of the most touristy destinations in Japan. There are numerous tourist destinations scattered around this 827.8 square kilometer city that commuting sometimes becomes too costly and stressful particularly for travelers who are on a tight budget. As of 2018, the fixed rate for city buses is 230 yen for adults and 120 yen for children per ride. Now, imagine riding the bus 5 times a day or more... Luckily, there is something that can remove this concern from the equation.

The Kyoto City Bus One-Day Pass gives you that hassle-free and cost efficient commuting experience during your visit. For just 600 yen for adults and 300 yen for children, tourists can get that unlimited bus ride for a day.

However, before availing the Kyoto City Bus One-Day Pass, one should keep these in mind first...

This one's for daddy and mommy

This one's for Ella
  1. The pass can only be used for Kyoto City buses. You have to pay the fare if you're riding the Keihan or JR buses.
  2. The pass can only be used for Kyoto City buses which are within the fixed rate area. Additional fees will be charged if one will be traveling to Ohara, Takao, Kifune, and Kurama areas.
The Kyoto City Bus One-Day Pass can be availed in the following places:
  • Kyoto City Bus and Subway Information Center
  • Commuter Pass Sales Counter
  • Ticket vending machines
  • Some convenience stores
  • Kyoto City buses
Kyoto City Bus Passenger Station
Keep in mind that you can only purchase one-day pass cards for adults in ticket vending machines and convenience stores while there is a huge chance that the cards are sold out on buses.

How to Use the Kyoto City Bus One-Day Pass
You see here that the date is imprinted after first use. It will only be valid on that day.

  1. After purchasing, check the box at the bottom part of the back side of the card. There should be nothing written or imprinted in it. Also, make sure not to write anything there before using it.
  2. Upon the first usage, insert the card in the ticket machine beside the driver before boarding down. Once you get your card back, you'd notice that the date will be imprinted in the box at the back of the card.
  3. On your next ride, just show the date at the back of the ticket to the driver before boarding down.
Overall, Kyoto City Bus One-Day Pass is something really worth purchasing if you are planning to ride the bus more than 3 times a day. It's better to purchase this than the unlimited bus and subway pass as there are only a few subway stations in Kyoto (not to mention this costs 1200 yen.) I could vouch and attest that the Kyoto City Bus One-Day Pass is worth every yen that I paid for.
